FAQ's

AT WHAT AGE CAN MY CHILD START TRAINING IN MARTIAL ARTS?

I usually do not recommend children starting lessons before 7-8 years of age.  Prior to this, most children experience difficulty in understanding the technical aspects of the sport.

WHAT IS THE COST OF LESSONS?

Our season lasts from mid-September until the end of June.  Students are welcome to try a few lessons before committing to membership.

Instruction fees for karate or judo are $425.00/year for students aged 12 and over, and $385.00/year for children.  If a student wishes to study both arts, a discount of 50% is offered on the second class.  If three or more family members enroll, a 15% family rate discount applies.

In addition, members must pay membership fees to Judo Manitoba, Karate Manitoba, and the Shintani Wado-Kai Karate Federation (approximately $80.00/year total).  Equipment costs vary with the desired quality of items, but a suitable uniform and required handpads can be purchased for about $100.00.

WHAT DO I WEAR?

Beginners should initially wear a t-shirt and shorts or sweat pants to class.  Eventually, students must wear an appropriate uniform (gei) tied with a belt (obi), but this is not necessary for new students.  Students should decide whether they wish to pursue lessons before purchasing gear.
